City aim to Peak on Finals Day
City of Edinburgh Kings are in no mood to lose their grip on the men's Scottish Play-offs title when they take on Clark Eriksson Fury as the domestic season reaches a thrilling climax at The Peak in Stirling on Saturday.
The capital side pipped Fury for the league title by just one point during the regular season but the Falkirk side came out on top when the sides met in the Scottish Cup semi-finals.
Kings' coach Doug Reilly believes his team is hitting form at the right time after their Final 4's demolition of Glasgow University last weekend.
"Hopefully, that's the case. It's been a season of peaks and troughs for us in some ways and I expect it to be a pretty tough battle on Saturday," he states.
"Fury beat us in the cup semi-final but we were without one of our key players though, to be fair, they played well that day. Hopefully, it will be a good match and a fitting end to the season.
"We expect to be at full strength. Simon Flockhart had suffered a hand injury when his dog bit him but, fortunately, he did not miss any games as there was a break in the play-offs.
"We also had our Lithuanian Audrius Ciapas back for the home match against Glasgow University and he gives us a different option and has done well for us.
"We know all about Fury. Roni Gordon is always and handful and Jonny Bunyan can cause problems as can Scott Russell but there are a few players we need to watch."
Edinburgh beat Glasgow University in the Final 4's by 169-120 on aggregate, winning the second leg at Portobello High School 95-50 after holding just a four-point lead from the first leg.
Clark Eriksson Fury had to battle St Mirren Reid Kerr College all the way in the other Final 4's tie before winning through 170-163 on aggregate. The Falkirk side won the away leg by 11 points but lost 83-79 in the return at the Mariner Centre.
Bunyan, the only Fury player to manage the full 40 minutes in both ties, was joint top scorer with Gordon on 25 points in the first leg and scored 22 points in the return.
John Bunyan senior, the Fury coach, believes the play-offs are now becoming an integral part of the Scottish basketball calendar.
"It prolongs the season for the top clubs and that can only be good," he said. "It can be a short season with league matches starting in September and finishing in March but this keeps our top players involved into May. Basketball is increasingly a year-round sport and we need to keep players involved as long as possible."
The women's play-off final also features the two teams that finished first and second in the regular season with Glasgow Rocks facing City of Edinburgh Kool Kats, who won last year's play-off title.
Glasgow Rocks eased past St Mirren Reid Kerr College 159-101 on aggregate and Kool Kats squeezed through 110-106 against Polonia Phoenix in the Final 4's.
The five-match basketball feast includes the men's and women's Chairman's Cup finals and a wheelchair basketball challenge match between Lothian Phoenix and Sheffield Steelers.
